OliverThe Town of Oliver heads up the South end of the Okanagan Valley. A destination for visitors from all over the world these are the two warmest spots around. With lots to offer locals and visitors a-like, we highly recommend you give some consideration to these two places. OliverThe Town of Oliver is located an approximate 30 minute drive South from Penticton. Bigger than Okanagan Falls and Kaleden, Oliver has a few more amenities for residents. There are schools from elementary up to high school all within the town. Oliver has a charming downtown that is worth spending some time in. One of our favourite things here is the quaint old buildings that have been maintained and continue to operate as businesses. The Oliver Theater is a real highlight. The historic building has its one screen theatre, old style popcorn in a bucket, and all the original charm. On the main street check out the Cock and Bull Cappuccino Bar and sit in one of the old school diner seats while you wait. Another gem in Oliver's downtown is the Fire Hall Brewery. Located in the original fire hall, they have now turned to brewing some tasty options for the non wine drinkers and they have a Bistro there too. If you're there, check out the Holy Smoke Stout. Named for an infamous cabin at Apex and a cool gang of people who called it home, this is one special beer. There are several options for some fun in the water, go for a canoe on Vaseaux Lake, or go fishing or swimming on Tul El Nuit Lake. Oliver shouts its pride as the "Wine Capitol of Canada" and they have some amazing wineries to brag about. If you're looking for wine and don't have time to make the rounds of wineries, the Desert Country Liquor Store has a great selection of local wines at great prices. But half the fun of being around the South Okanagan Valley is doing the wine tours. So here are our recommendations when you're in Oliver. Tinhorn Creek is a beautiful spot with lots to do. Come and have some wine, or come in summer time and catch a show in their outdoor amphitheatre. They also have a fabulous restaurant called Miradoro, which offers up some amazing food. Some of the other wineries we think you should check out are Church and State Winery for great wine and beautiful setting. Hester Creek Winery and their lovely Tuscan style restaurant Terrafina are also a must do. Our other two favourites for great wine, atmosphere, and a quality experience, are Le Vieux Pin, and Stoneboat. There are also endless options for fresh fruit and produce around Oliver, as well as outdoor activities. Check out Covert Farms, they have great produce, host events, and have tons going on including summer camps for kids. Getting outdoors around Oliver will take you to many great hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, and boating options. |
